[RC] Red ribbons and kickers... - Ridecamp Guest

==========================================

Here's my story on kickers...I was out with a group of teenage girls I work
with all with differing levels of equine experience; some first timers on the
trail...I was riding a three year old filly, first time on the trail who wanted
to be with the lead horses trotting ahead of us...I needed to stay behind with
the first timers, so moved her in behind her MOTHER...thought I was safe there,
but didn't realize I was a bit close...mother kicked out telling filly to get
back but got my leg instead of filly's chest, fracturing my tibia...that was in
early August, and I'm still healing now, latter part of December...what did I
learn from that experience?? It only takes a split-second to change your life,
anything can happen that quickly...stay alert of your surroundings...REALLY
important, stay well behind ANY horse even if you think they might have a good
relationship. That wasn't the last time that mare kicked out, so from now on
she'll have a red ribbon tied on her tail...also it brought home the importance
of spending as much time as possible with your horses, doing as much ground
work as you can when you're not riding...these horses don't get much attention,
but they will when I can start working with them again...
