[RC] tailgating..they can't all be first! - Kimberly M Price

"I am not saying that if you ALWAYS asked your horse to crawl that he couldn't

learn to crawl along as his default walk under saddle. I AM saying that
training your horse how to rate himself will not cause him to "lose" his
big walk any more than training a barrel horse to lope will ruin his racing
career."

****
boy, do I agree with that! I can't tell you how many times I've gone out
with people whose horses 'have' to be first or they flip out...and I'm not
talking about youngsters either. These horses are just plain poorly trained
and when you have two of them together on the same trail ride, well, it
just isn't going to work! At some point every horse 'should' learn to listen
enough to the rider to stay behind if asked. Of course you work up to this
and give them the opportunity to be in front, middle and behind at different
times.
