==========================================

We live in S. CA so I have never run into this problem however I
have seen a few freeze free watering troughs for horses surfing
the web. None of them look like traditional water tanks and
they are non electric which might solve two problems at once.
Your horses may drink from them because they are not like the
standard tanks your horses are now leary of and they are freeze
free as well.

I have NO first hand knowledge of any of these products but if I lived where
freezing was a problem I would take a hard look at the the following:

http://www.horsesonly.com/amesco/ - a product called SunTanks -
42 gallon unit is supposed to be guaranteed to 50F degrees below
zero

http://www.ritchiefount.com/thriftyking.html# - Ritchie
Industries - Thrifty King models are supposed to insulate the
water so well that you can make it through the winter without
supplying heat in many areas

http://www.hawkeyesteel.com/ - POLAR-MAX® DRINKERS there is a
comparison on their web site of several manufactures waterers
