And another thing that works great is a bot knife.  Just stab it in and saw! 

Hoof knives work well, too.

The cleverest ones are the ones that the ranchers around here use when
feeding large numbers of small bales to cattle (those who still do
that, instead of feeding big bales with machines), and have to work
fast feeding off of the back of a moving vehicle.  They take old
swather or mower blades (those little triangular blades with serrated
edges) and spot weld them to a metal handle.  Then they can just chop
the string with one quick chop, and viola! it's cut!
