[RC] NPR News Story on Kentucky TB Racing - Peter Harper

On the topic of performance enhancing drugs used on
horses I listened to an interesting news story on NPR
last night on the way home.

According to the story Kentucky has one of the most
liberal drug policies in horse racing. Kentucky
allows breeders to administer up to five different
medications to horses on race day. They interviewed a
track vet who routinely administers a cocktail of
three drugs. They didn't list them but Bamanine was
mentioned later on in the story. One breeder
interviewed argued that the use of drugs was a matter
of economics. For a horse to earn their keep they
need to race 2-3 times a month and that they could
only do that with the routine use of pain medication.
The story went on to argue that the use of pain
medication could mask a critical injury that may
result in serious injury to the horse and rider during
competition.

There was one powerful quote "In Kentucky there are
two types of breeders; those breeders who use drugs
and those who loose".

Food for thought should endurance betting catch on.

Cheers, Pete in TX
