You could use vet wrap over it, and can then discard it after a
few uses...or, go to a fabric store and get some fleece remnants.
I just got a half yard fleece remnant for $3.  You can cover tack
with it and, with the amount of fabric you get, have plenty in 
reserve for any replacements or repairs if it gets worn or full
of 'stuff' (burrs, etc).  Fleece is good for all kinds of things.

Lauretta and Shaba (it especially keeps me warm and is soft...
Mom made a rump warmer for me that works GREAT!!)
