[RC] LD/BC - Bruce Weary DC

    Hi Heidi--
I don't propose to have all the answers regarding how to revamp the BC program, but I think it is worthy of debate to that end. This is a complicated issue, with many viewpoints, and I think we have to be careful not to oversimplify it. You make the point that the LD/BC has been embraced by many because "it rewards taking care of the horse." Again, the concern level is over the speeds some horses must maintain in order to qualify for consideration in the first place. The fact that a given rider might hold back a bit (amongst the front runners) in order to get a better pulse recovery or show better for BC doesn't have the same effect as someone who is truly riding conservatively.
My time commitments are many, and as such I have to work hard at keeping myself abreast of trends and issues in our sport regarding the welfare of the horse. I am always looking for better ways to stay updated. Can you share with me how you keep track of what is happening at all the LD rides in 7 different regions? It would make my work a lot easier.
Lastly, you note that I proposed a method of evaluation that is "exactly how vets judge BC" now. Not exactly. Not if speed/placement/ride time is still part of the equation. That is the main parameter that evokes the most potential risk to the horse, and thus the most concern from those of us who feel we can come up with a program that eliminates or reduces that risk. The W and SW regions harbor arguably some of the best and best known endurance riders in the world. They have no difficulty "smelling the coffee." It's what's contained in the coffee that wrinkles a nostril or two.     Bruce
