Hmmmm...you must not go to the same rides I do!  Nat is correct...and it's
cumulative.  A 1,000 lb well conditioned horse with no "manners" is
dangerous to the rider and everyone around them. You can get away without
that training to some extent if you just trail ride, but the behavior of the
horse at a ride start will show everyone whether you have "trained" your
horse or just "conditioned" him.

Very true! However, one must not forget that everytime
you handle a horse you are teaching it something,
including negative responses and/or bad habits. Good
training is essential for a good horse, and it is a
lifelong commitment to continue the training.  Luckily
it gets easier as time progresses ;0)
