[RC] Last Ass Over the Pass? - Robin Everett

Hi! This is a curiosity question to folks in Colorado, or anyone who knows about this. I teach online classes, so I meet lots of students from all over. When a new class starts, we introduce ourselves and I always mention endurance riding. One of my new students, after hearing one of her classmates talk about her mules used for trailriding, posted this:

"In the mountain town of Leadville (I believe it is Leadville) they have an annual race called "Last ass over the pass".  It is a half marathon that runners run with a four legged ass.  It was started as a loose re-enactment of the old gold miners racing to town with their gold and their mules."

This sounds really interesting. Has anyone out there done it or gone to see it?
