Re: [RC] 50 or 25? - rides2far

It seems to be common to think the LD riders are going faster, when
in
fact the opposite is true.

Don't know if this would make a difference or not...but your theory is
assuming that the riders are going a steady pace the entire ride. I think
most of the people's complaints about the 25 are of fast *starts*. I know
that it was a while before I was doing my later loops as fast as my early
ones. In fact...when I was a rookie I was often going 10 mph the first
loop and maybe 6 the last. As I got more experience it leveled out quite
a bit...so perhaps you could do a study (you'd have to do it at a ride
since the splits aren't available elsewhere) on the speed each distance
does the first loop...or even first 2 miles.

Personally, I think the problems are usually the *yahoos* just getting
into the sport who let it rip. Often those yahoos turn out to be nice
folks after a year or so but can be pretty wild eyed in their early
rides. I'm guessing more of them start out in the 25 than the 50 but
that's just a guess. Their behavior has absolutely nothing to do with the
experienced competitors who do this week after week, well paced looking
good. I really hate when the LD discussion goes around because I think
those opposed have the worst case scenario in their head and many who
read and are from the consciencious crowd think they're talking about
them. It accomplishes nothing and there's way too much room for
misunderstanding.

By the way, I started an LD last year for the first time in maybe 10
years (I elevated so finished a 50) There were lots of newcomers in the
25 who did such irritating things like not following proper ettiquette at
water and such that I wondered how all my friends who do LD every ride
could stand having to break in so many newcomers. I appreciate them doing
it though. By the time they get into the 50's they've learned most of
what not to do. Again...these were *not* the weekly LD riders...they were
a work in progress. :-))
