RE: [RC] LDs - Libby & Quentin Llop DVMIn Canada they call them Mileage rides. I have heard people refer to themselves proudly as mileage riders. Personally my problem has always been with the "L" word. I am older and have a variety of infirmities but really hate for anyone to refer to me as "L"ed in any way. I had hoped to move up to 50 this year but had the other knee replaced in Feb. instead. Maybe next year I'll become a real endurance rider. As of now I refer to myself as a 25 or 30 mile distance rider. Just can't say that "L" word. :>) So what would be a better name? "Novice" was considered, but there are a lot of folks who ride LD who are far from being novice. "Short" didn't really have the right connotations, either. I've really never heard any other suggestions that weren't either inaccurate or had even worse connotations than "limited." And the adjective "limited" refers to the noun "distance"--it is the distance that is limited, not the horse or the rider. While I sympathize with the "limitations" of the name, I think it is easy to invest far too much into the name, instead of just going and riding. I've never given the name a second thought, personally, even when it was ME that was too "limited" to ride 50... ;-) Heidi =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
