[RC] weaning help - Mary Krauss

I fretted about weaning our filly from the day she was born but lucked into a natural form of separation that really avoided the whole issue: When Maxi was 6 months old, we moved Salima (mom) and Maxi in with several other horses, including an older gelding. Maxi bonded with her "uncle" and slowly lost interest in Mom. About 2 months later we moved Salima back to our house. Maxi didn't even look up when we left -- Salima let out one or two calls once we drove away, but that was it. There was no separation angst, no drying up trauma. It felt GREAT.

Mary K. 'n' Salima--who just might be interested in another baby; too bad Bruiser's been gelded.

p.s. I've lost touch with Maxi, their baby. If anyone out there ever runs into a beautiful grey "Aralusian" possibly still named Maxi, 7 years old, please send me a note: lazykfarm at comcast dot net.
