Another factor in the heat equation: Friction. Where the horse moves and the saddle doesn't there is friction at that site which generates heat too. The Saddle pads which have shear - one part of the pad moves with the horse, the other part moves with the saddle- will generate less heat. Natural sheepskin, Supracor and the old folded wool blanket that the cavalry used are all examples of pads that have good shear.  Libby
