Re: [RC] Was Rude Riders Revisited......now P&R procedure - Barbara McCrary

In our ride, there are two times recorded on the rider card.....the time the horse arrived at the vet check site and the time the horse is deemed recovered to criteria. Out time, of course, is based on the recovery time. Our P&R people are so experienced they set up their own "vet box", a square defined by push-in stakes and surveyors tape. I'm not exactly sure how they deal with the P&R procedure, as they have perfected it over the years and I don't even think about it, nor interfere with their method. It works well.........that's all I care about. When it comes time for me to print out ride results, I include arrival time and recovery time. That way, riders have a permanent record of how their horse handled that particular leg of our ride. I have asked riders if this is important to them, and most of them say it is......to have a record of their horse's performance for that ride. Some riders keep ALL of these records so they can compare over the years.

My hubbie is the main rider in our family and I spend much of my time
waiting for him as a P&R person. We are "out west" as it were and while
each ride varies some, I've worked with Anna Sampson for several years now
and we've got this method down cold. When a rider comes in, she records the
time. When the horse pulses down, that is when the hold time begins.
Riders check out with the timer. At the finish line, for all but LDs, the
in times are recorded as they come in. If there are a group of riders
together, they get the same minute plus .01, .02, .03 etc. There are plenty
of competitive folks in the PNW and this seems to work well and I believe is
in keeping with the "spirit and letter of the law".

The Race of Champions used this method, every ride in the Southeast Region
has
used this method for years, and I think many rides in the eastern U.S. do
it
about like this. But I haven't seen it much in the west.
