Sure. And if you're afraid of GL, use brown sugar, honey, and/or carrots--just 
get the fast-acting carbs in immediately after. If you can find a place to get 
BCAAs, add them to the mix. GL is simply a convenient way of getting the job 
done.

How much brown sugar, honey and/or carrots would be enough to get the job done?

Not sure because I have no info on these, but the GL dose is 4 ounces, so 
something like that or a little more, depending on what you're using. GL is a 
relatively long chained sugar, so it is slower than something like plain sugar 
or honey--still it appears (glucose) in the blood stream within 15 minutes and 
peaks (glucose) in about 2 hours. Shorter chained sugars would give more of a 
spikey glucose response curve but carrots probably something similar.
