Re: [RC] Weight and Horses - jen

Liz, thanks for sharing your perspective with me. Your boy sounds alot like mine, except that he's maybe 14.3 and about 1130 lbs. I figure he needs to be built big to pack me around. :) I would appreciate Char's email address. We are doing LSD (or at least attempting to) with the hopes of doing 25's next year.

Subject: Weight and Horses

HI!
I'm 5'4" and with tack I'm on the low end of a heavyweight / high end middleweight.

I ride several different horses and I can give you my perspective. I ride a BIG, HEAVY built arab. named Belesemo Tango. He's all CMK, stands 15.3 (no kidding I've sticked him), he's wide chested, big barreled and big butt. He tops the scale at about 1150. Real short coupled.

He loped in the last 2 miles of a 25 (2nd day of a 2 day 50) and was down to 60........ta da.....1 minute after crossing the finish line. Next year he'll do his first 50.

Personally I haven't had any problems with him, his heart rate or cooling. He's kinda lazy and just takes GREAT care of himself. I also ride a big thick muscled mustang. With him I just take rides a little slower if it's hot, maybe use a little ice on the juglar vein to help him cool. Clip him close.

You can also talk to Char Antuzzi. She posts on RC and if you need / want her email let me know. (She trains horses for me) She rides a 16 hand mustang, that is built like a tank and she finished Tevis on him last year. She is WONDERFUL and you won't talk to a nicer person.
