RE: [RC] Treadmills/Libby - Libby & Quentin Llop DVM

The original poster wasn't inquiring about high speed treadmills. They were
asking about a Safe T Mill currently on e-bay and wondered if they could get
a benefit for their endurance horse from one. I know of three Bowmans
sitting unused in barns near here because race horse trainers didn't manage
a favorable outcome with them. Also, I'm not a licensed anything: just an
experienced treadmill owner with an endurance horse who sometimes finishes
and occasionally wins. Libby

We used to think that, 20 years ago - until we had more experience with the
treadmill. Our current protocol is to set the speed at 4 mph and the slope
at 1/10 ( 1 foot rise in 10 ft) and put the horses on for an hour. Thereby
they walk 4 miles and climb over 2000 feet. Cardio vascular is rarely the
weak link in our horses and trotting on one of these machines is an easy way
to give a horse a really sore back, as many racehorse trainers have found
out. Libby>

I've worked with high speed equine treadmills since they were invented.
There are ways to incur sore backs and ways to avoid them. Meanwhile,
Specificity is the first law of conditioning. Finally, I sincerely doubt
that you've encountered "many" racehorse trainers using high speed
treadmills. As a licensed professional, it is your responsibility to deliver
accurate information.
