There are plenty of "rescue" horses out there who aren't nut cases! I've got several of them.

No, not all are nutcases, but the non-nutcases have a better chance of finding a good home. My newest horse had been a confirmed bolter with two owners and five years... Know his problem? He hates curb bits and no one ever bought a saddle to fit him. Six months in a happy mouth french link (from 10" shanks and twisted wire snaffle mouth) and a well fitting saddle, and he's a solid citizen for me. Still doesn't like contact, but he's not bolted on me since the last time I came off him in early summer (the saddle that I thought fitted, didn't)! He's not got the mind for any competitive sport, he's just been pushed too hard, too much in his life and doesn't handle excitement well.

My second rescue with agression problems? He hated curb bits, another bad saddle fit, ridden very hard four or five times a year, bad shoe job, and the owner beat him. New bit, new saddle, consistent training, and he's a beginner horse. I've ridden this guy out with the cross country horses in training, and it doesn't bother him for other horses to gallop off from him, he keeps walking.

My first is still a nutcase, but I love her.

Many, many times those nutcases are pain issues.

Steph
