Re: [RC] Pigeon Fever - Don Huston

Hello Lani, sorry to hear your horse got pigeon fever. It sure is an ugly mess but all the horses at our boarding stable that got it (maybe 10 out of 40) recovered just fine. We never lanced any of them. Some were worse than others. Some swelled in the chest, some on the sides but eventually the swelling (pus) migrated to under the chest and belly, broke and the horse's system took care of it. If the horse looked distressed or didn't eat well we gave 20cc penicillin 2x a day for 5 days but rotate the shots around the horse, neck lt, butt lt, neck rt, etc. Some swellings broke and drained some didn't. Some got 20-30 small (2-3" dia) swellings everywhere that broke and looked like major acne. Never gave any bute that I know of. Keep the horses active and they will heal much faster cause their systems need the movement. I'm not saying this is what you should do. I'm just passing on what we did to cope with that mess. It happened 10 years ago and nobody remembered it ever happening before (stable opened in 1972) and it has never come back. Good Luck

Don Huston
