I've been told it's like setting a hot glass of water on an icy surface, it gives the shoe a better fit, and the horse is less likely to lose it.  I've had my horses hot-shod for years, and have never lost a shoe at a ride....and have had absolutely no lameness issues in relation to shoeing this way.
