Re: [RC] [RC] Suspensory injury - Chris Paus

That might not be a bad idea! I do know some people heal suspensory and similar injuries by just turning the horse out to pasture for 6 months, on the theory that as long as it hurts, the horse won't overdo the exercise.

If you are giving bute, you do need to keep the horse confined so he doesn't do too much and injure the suspensory further. Bute is just for the initial or acute stage of the injury. The vet told me that the swelling can further stress the ligament and cause thickening, which is why they prescribe an anti inflammatory in the first stages of the injury.

I wish you luck. Please keep us posted on your horse's progress and if you get a second opinion.

I neglected to say that my horse is getting bute -- he got two tabs Wednesday evening, and now one tab 2x daily for three days followed by one tab 1x daily for an additional four days.

I agree Lucy. The cost of an ultrasound is not that much. It's better than risking permanent injury. We had an initial diagnostic ultrasound done, one done about halfway through the treatment  and one again when the vet thought Zab was pretty well healed.

the important thing about rehabbing these, Cindy, is to tryto heal it without thickening of the suspensory, my vet said. That's why the stall rest and the initial bute to reduce swelling, and why you don't want to bring the horse back into work too quickly.
