Re: [RC] [RC] Freeform trial and chapstick - Mary Krauss

Ok, I tried the chapstick trick. Very clever. One little glitch upon realizing that one needs level ground to perform the test fairly: I own 7 acres of hilly ground. I decided to go with averages. The Cherry-burst flavor stick (!) rolled farther forward than it did backward when I turned Salima around which suggests that Laney is right. (I should have guessed as Salima is built a tiny bit downhill.) Sandy (great advocate of FF saddles) suggested lifting and moving the detachable seat a tiny bit to find level. This seemed to work. The chapstick now rolls evenly and I don't have to consciously shift back to avoid whacking into the front of the saddle. Maybe they build it that way to discipline the rider!

I'm a little concerned that you had to make a physical move - moving your butt towards the rear of the saddle - in order for the seat to be comfortable. My concern is that where one sits first is usually where the saddle really wants you to sit....if you find you're being moved forward against the pommel, the problem might be that the saddle isn't sitting really level.... A quick test for how the saddle sits is to use a chapstick. Put it across the seat and watch where it rolls to. If it stays in what your eye says is the deepest part, the saddle is level. If it rolls forward, the saddle tips to the front. It would probably be a good idea to do this test before riding and also after riding for a while because things can shift and change.
