[RC] re: TWH as endurance horses - Peter Harper

Terry,

I ride a TWH mare and have been riding in 25LDs this
past season. Since the majority of the other horses
on the trail are Arab or Arab cross's I'll offer my
observations.

You'll have to work a little at pacing. Depending on
your Arab and TWH the walker might have a difficult
time keeping in gait with the Arab's extended trot.
The 9-10 mile/hr trot is fast for a running walk and
the walker may have to break into a cantor to keep up.

On the other hand on the steep technical sections or
in deep sand and mud the Arab will have a tough time
keeping up with the Walker dog walk. Walker's are
very sure footed and not many Arabs can keep up with
our dog walk with out needing to break into a trot.

Over all you'll be faster on the flats and your wife
will be faster on the technical sections. You'll both
get back to camp about at the same time but you'll
need to compromise along the way.

I'm a heavy weight rider and my mare is just under 16
hands and we do OK on recoveries. The only time I had
trouble was when I didn't ride my own ride and tried
to canter in to the finish.

There are more and more gaited riders out there. If
the Arab is a Porsche the Walker is a Mercedes.

Cheers, Pete in TX

Subject: [RC] TWH as endurance horses

My wife is wanting to get a TWH to ride with me and my
Arab on 25 and
50 =
milers. Is the TWH a reasonable breed for this ?
Also would a 15 hand
=
TWH ccool down more quicklly than a 16 hand TWH ?
Thanks for your =
input.
