Death Valley can be pretty cold at times. I've usually started it with a long-sleeved polypropylene T-neck with a windbreaker over it. Later I can pull the windbreaker and tie it around my waist, using the pockets as storage for necessities. If it's REALLY cold, then I put on a light vest over the T-neck.

Artificial tears......

Start the ride with one layer less than you were comfortable in while
tacking.  Unless it is the Death Valley Ride, My usual is a long
sleeved T Shirt and a vest of somekind.

And all of the lotion comments are right on.  5-10% humidity will
suck it right out of you.
