Re: [RC] Automatic Waterers - Jonni----- Original Message ----- From: <heidi@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> I used those for years. They tended to go out at the most inconvenient of times, and constituted much more threat with above-ground wiring. Got tired of extension cords, flipped breakers, and surprises...<<< Indeed, I would not do ANY electric type heater for the winter that needed an extension cord. Also, they must have a GFI on them, to protect the horses from a short. Many barns and pastures makes this set up impossible, I am lucky, that I was able to cut a hole into our barn/shop wall, and install the winter tub, against that wall, with the cord from the drain hole heater running through the hole, and plugging in to the receptacle in the building. We added a GFI ourselves. Before that, we broke ice. Our faucets are the type that drain back down after using them, so they do not freeze. And, during the summer, the tough does heat up, but it is very large, and the water is not "hot". They also have the choice to drink from the pond.
