[RC] How far... - Ridecamp Guest

==========================================

So the question is: Can a person today riding 3 horses go 200 miles in 10
hours? That means each horse is going 66.6 miles in 3.33 hours.

I tried it and came no where close, and wonder if anyone w/ a few polo ponies
and a Bay Mare would try it and let me know just "How Far We Have Come." I'd
like to watch if anyone ever tries.

Cheers,

Same in TB racing, Tom. At the turn of the century horses like American Eclipse
were winning on a Sunday afternoon by delivering 3 4-mile races, best 2 out of
3, with the winning times of all the miles under 2:00 per mile. Today there
isn't a TB that could survive one 4 mile race with all the miles under 2:00.
Probably isn't a race rider who could ride that far, that fast, either.

Life is a little too easy these days, and a strong work ethic isn't necessary
to survive. At least, not in this country. In those days race horses worked all
week as plow horses or carriage horses. Their owners typically had to scramble
to stay alive--you didn't have corporations or the government hiring "entitled"
drones by the thousands. People, and horses, had to deliver the goods.
