Regarding oat hay-- oat hay can contain high levels of nitrates, and
should be tested for safe levels before feeding it to horses. Most
forages have some nitrates, and it is the conversion to NITRITES that
cause NITRATE poisoning.
Side note--just got back from the vet with my new gelding, who, as low
man on the totem pole was chased around by my other horses and ran into
a tree branch and laid his chest open thereby severing one belly of his
triceps clean through. The vet did a great job putting Humpty Dumpty
back together again, but only time will tell if he can make a full
recovery. A little prayer from all you RC people would be appreciated.
Oh, and his name is Benny. Thanks, Bruce Weary
