Re: [RC] iron defiency? vets? - Chris Paus

I wonder about the daily wormer. I know a lot of people use it, but to me it just doesn't seem like a good idea. Wormers basically are poisons. I know it's one of those necessary evils and I do use paste wormers about 4 times a year. But I've heard from so many people who have had problems with horses after they've started the daily wormers. Of course, tehre's probably an equal number of people who use them successfully, so it's one of those things you make your own decision about.

I'd think that white gums and low iron signals that there's some bleeding going on. Might this horse be one that should be scoped for ulcers? You can treat him with an iron supplement, but it doesn't get at the cause of the problem.

The last ride we were at in SC the vet looked at my guys gums and
commented on how white they were. Had the vet out for shots Friday and
mentioned it to her so she took some blood and done a PCV test I think.
Called me that night and said it was on the low side of the range. Should
I be concerned and should I put him on some kind of iron supplement. He
is on pasture with grass and timothy hay, a good quality sweet feed, daily
wormer, biozin, flax seed, ABC Plus.
Had been looking at the Platinum Performance as an all around supplement.
