[RC] Hard to shoe horses - rfd program - Ridecamp Guest

==========================================

I taped and watched Chris Cox on RFD a couple days ago about a hard to shoe
Palomino mare. I saw the tale end of the program, so I taped it later in the
evening so I could see what she was like in the beginning. She was a problem
horse, and he was demonstrating how to solve this particular horses problem. I
think he has started a series working with "problem horses". 10 year old mare,
and the woman owner had gone through shoer after shoer after shoer. On her
hind end she basically would move into the shoer, and also got into kicking
out. Front end she would strike, and the shoer couldn't get her foot between
his legs to work on the foot. Her feet looked great already, amazing the
patience of this shoer to get them looking that good with the hassles of the
mare. Mare had some deep issues.

Chris worked with her to gain her trust. He first of all made her move around
and yield her hind quarters when he said so. Moved her enough (not overly mind
you) to get her to want to stand still basically. If she wanted to move
towards him, he moved her away and made her do some work going around until she
stood still. Not round penning her, he had the lead rope on her. He worked
slowly, and in the end she didn't put up a fuss, and did as he asked. He was
very gentle actually, and even the shoer was there to pick up her legs in the
end.

I have a horse that is a bit wiggle and jerky with him feet with the shoer
also. He is busy I would say. I want him to stand totally dead quiet like all
my other horses do. He is a 4 yr old QH. I kinda did the same thing he did,
and it worked. But I had to only go around a couple times each way, and only
one more time when he wiggled. I will continue to do that and will set a goal
to make the horse not move when the shoer comes next time. I have a fantastic
shoer, and I would never want to loose him as a shoer! If the horse jerks it's
foot, it can strain the shoer's back.

Really good show. Only about 20 minutes long. It should be on again this
week. I have actually learned some interesting things from Chris Cox. Direct
TV channel 379 if you don't know already. Check the web for the next time he
comes on.

Also he placed the foot down gently, and didn't drop it like I have seen many
do. He was gentle and quiet, and respectful, and so was the mare in the end.
