Re: [RC] Stream crossings and training - Carol Suggs

Getting off and leading is very risky with a horse that is scared about
water. A good friend of ours broke his ankle when he got off to lead his
horse over a stream and the young horse jumped on top of him. For some
reason they gravitate toward you like you are a big stepping stone or
something!

While introducing a new horse to our trails, a few years ago, we came to a
small wooden bridge across a deep little gulch. It was only about 12 feet
long, adequately wide, no side rails or any edging of any sort. Most
horses
walk across it without problems. This particular horse wasn't going to
go,
or to follow. So I dismounted, unhooked my rein, and re-hooked it as an
11-foot lead. I was well across the bridge when the horse made a mad
dash,
slammed into me, and threw me against a very large and unforgiving tree.
I
wasn't damaged, except for discomfort, but it taught me a lesson. There
must have been a better way to handle that situation. Eventually, I sent
the horse back to the seller, as he never learned not to repeat the same
dangerous behavior each time I encountered a problem. I had him for a
year
and never made any progress.

"...decided to just get off and lead Him thru ..."

One does have to be careful not to get jumped on though. As with many
things, I am not completely sure how I prevent that. I think it has
something to do with not pulling on the lead while standing in front
facing the horse. I do try to keep my arm extended, so the horse is not
lined up with me and perhaps I also stand in an area that does not look
like the best or safest place to jump.

Before I get to smug, I will remember that sooner or later I will
probably
misjudge the situation and get jumped on. Oh well, we are involved in an
extreme sport.
