Re: [RC] re: Unicorn Hunt Ride Story - rdcarrie

A huge CONGRATULATIONS to Alex and to the 3 other 100 mile riders!  What a feat, to ride 100 miles in the heat and humidity of East Texas in August!  Those were 8 tough individuals...4 riders and 4 horses.  way to go!  You have a right to be proud, Maria!  :)

Dawn (quite humbled by their accomplishment...)

Great story Dawn. Lord knows you have endured a lot out on trail.

Short story of my own.... another new rider joins the ranks of 100 mile rider at the Unicorn Hunt. My daughter, Alex, was 4 yrs old when she had a bad horse accident and ended up with a collapsed lung. Took her awhile to start riding again. When she was 10 she attempted her first LD ride... she fell and broke her arm. Once again, she did not ride for awhile. This year, right after her 12th birthday, she tried another LD but the person she rode with rode too slow and they were overtime. She was dishearten and discouraged.

Finally, I told her to try one more time and ride a 50 with her dad. She did at Bluebonnet in April. She completed, racing her dad for turtle. Dad got his first turtle award. She went on to do 3 more 50s. Then at Unicorn Hunt she wanted to do 100 miler. It was very hot and humid as Dawn said. It was a very long day but she completed a 100 miler (23 hours later). It was her horse's first 100 miler too. She is one tough little girl.
