Re: [RC] Tom Ivers - rides2far

. I read hism
book along time ago on conditioning and feeding the racehorse. Back
in the 80's

I was 22 years old when Equus devoted an entire issue to Tom's theories.
I took the magazine to school with me and another teacher who had horses
helped herself to it! I actually went to her house and asked for it back.
However, as I recall it was supposed to be a revolution, but the next
year they again reported that it hadn't quite worked. I think lameness
was the main problem in the stables that concentrated on all the heart
rates, sprints, etc.

The greatest engine in the world is useless without wheels. The limiting
factor in most of my competition has been lameness, so I never really
benefited from reading the articles. When I read the beat pulp post I
really didn't care. I never saw an endurance horse break down due to a
bone going. I have seen them dehydrated so if beet pulp gets more water
into them at a ride I use it, but don't consider it a part of my religion
or anything. I

Personally, I was really interested in Steph's x-rays and the idea of
what the angles meant, etc. Wish that discussion hadn't been overshadowed
by a discussion of beet pulp & foals. I did make an effort to turn the
discussion that direction but it failed.

I know nutrition is that final finishing touch that can make a really
good horse even better, but the "first do no harm" rule means you'd
better know a LOT about it before you start getting creative. That said,
I've got some incredible athletes at my school...one that is breaking
many high school track records and judging by his background, he was
probably raised on sugar and potato chips.
