Re: [RC] interesting piece on west nile - DESERTRYDR1

While this is an interesting story, it's another one of those misleading 
ones.  It's not true that crows are the only or main cause of the spread of 
West 
Nile Virus.  Lots of bird species are responsible.  The reason that crows are 
such a big deal is that they DIE when they get West Nile.  Most other bird 
species, except for ravens, magpies and some raptors, get it just as often.  
They 
just don't die!   

When dead crows are found, they can be tested to see if they had West Nile.  
In that sense they serve as an indicator species, showing that West Nile is 
present in the bird species in that area.  Just goes to show how reporters can 
take a bit of scientific study and turn it into something entirely different!
