[RC] IV's in race horses? - Sarah Simmons

"My next door neighbor, a Standardbred trainer, gives
every one of his horses IV fluids before every race.
Libby"

This sounds strange to me Libby. How soon before the
race does he give it? I know if you give a race horse
just a couple of swallows of water an hour or two
before a race it has a great impact on their speed.
Wouldn't giving them fluids via IV have the same
effect or is it the water in their stomach that slows
them down?

This is just what I have heard old race trainers say,
to never let a horse drink 2-4 hours prior to a race.
I have no personal experience with it however.
