RE: [RC] Tevis questions - Susan E. Garlinghouse, D.V.M.

I have mules, both mollies (the correct term for a female). An uncastrated
male is also called a jack, a gelded male is a john. The uncastrated males
do still exhibit sexual behavior, and can be VERY aggressive, thus are
always castrated, the sooner the better.

And there are very rare instances of mules reproducing. Couldn't tell you
the particulars, though.

Subject: Re: [RC] Tevis questions

I'd like to propose a question about gender of mules, and perhaps Heidi can
answer this one. True that mules cannot reproduce, as they are sterile, but

I would think that a male needs to be castrated to prevent sexual behavior
typical of an unaltered male animal. Just because he is sterile does not
mean he is not interested and may show undesirable behavior.

Is this correct, or not??

Barbara
