Re: [RC] [RC] Grain Storage Containers - Barbara McCrary - Barbara McCrary

Our wood rats are your packrats....same critter. It's interesting to see
what they will carry off and put into their nests. One year, most of the
nests were made of our trail flagging, all chopped up .....very colorful.

Does anyone besides me use a feed bin (silo)? Those
are great if you caulk the you-kno-what out of them
and store your feed there. Next batch of beet pulp is
get is going there (it holds 1-1/2 tons but beet pulp
shreds are a little "fluffy" so one ton -- maybe)! I
learned the "hard way" about rats just like Barbara
did! The kids were messing around in the horse
trailer and a rat got inside, burrowing into the
shavings. Had quite a time getting that son of a gun
out of there (cats wouldn't get near it as it was
nearly as big as they were!). Similar problem in the
feed room (which was open as the horses were out in
the pasture). They wouldn't eat the poison, but
packrats would steal it and we'd find it in their
nests. The only thing that worked then was a .22
pistol and rat shot (works quite well on the snakes
that were coming in after the mice, too)!

I also get metal trash cans at Tractor Supply (it's
very rural here) 30 miles away and the lids are very
snug. I store sweet feed, rice bran, and my
NutriBoost in them.

Oh my Barbara, Where in heck was the can stored? In
a barn! Wow. I haven't had that happen yet. I know I
do have to keep my lids tight on my can or a mouse
will visit. Haven't seen a rat yet! Nasty things.

Do the metal cans hold the lids tight?
