Re: [RC] Future AERC Directions - Was 100 Mile One Day Rides - merryben

Many of us would love that but I just don't think it will ever happen.  People like having a whole bunch of awards instead of just one.  mb

The cool thing about the old system, was that people could track their
progress, and track the competition throughout the season and use different
strategys (e.g. lots of slow rides vs. a few fast rides). And points-wise a
slow 100 mile completion has the same points as a 50 mile win (150) - makes
one consider options when the entire season looms.

Maybe we should consider going back to this overall Championship format?

Subject: [RC] Future AERC Directions - Was 100 Mile One Day Rides

Stagg,
I am concerned about the future of 100 mile rides in our sport.  I am
offering the 100 mile distance at the Wolverine this year and so far have no
official takers (though many pledged their support last year and one who did
and can't make it still supplied us with the BC award and several are
mulling it over and may go either way--the 50 or the 100 depending on the
"day" and conditions).  It's a tough ride even under the best of conditions.
We don't want to "dumb down" the trail but want to offer a "real" endurance
ride that people can be proud to have accomplished.  I don't know if we can
offer the ride again if I have little to zero participation.  What could
AERC do to give ride managers the incentive to offer 100 mile rides?
Financial support?  Help with the awards or vetting?  Heck, I am thinking I
should start charging more for the 50s and 25s and give the 100s a big
discount!  I don't have any concrete ideas at this point (though I might in
two weeks AFTER the ride) but really think an incentive/support program of
some sort might be in order for managers and maybe even riders (like the
discount thing).  I will be keeping my eyes and ears open.
