Re: [RC] [RC] Lightning - Soli Sorokin

I live about 10 miles from East Fork Stables and ride there
frequently. I hadn't heard about the incident until my July 4th trip
on horseback from Jamestown to Byrdstown....As I rode through
Byrdstown, I noticed a really REALLY black cloud approaching and
figured I'd just have to ride the storm out as I was no where near
home and no one could get to me in time with a truck and trailer.

Well, a complete stranger stopped me and insisted that I COULD not and
WOULD not ride out the storm, period. I WOULD put my horse in their
barn and go inside their house until it passed. I attempted an
argument, and they replied with the story about what had happened a
few days previously out at East Fork.

I was pretty thankful for their persistence. Although I've rode out
quite a few thunderstorms here, it was one of the bad ones, and the
story of the folks out at East Fork reminded me that nature is not
really something to scoff at.

Just before our little race for low ground yesterday, one of the other
riders told me about this incident below. Gave us more incentive to move
on. The woman who told me said they'd "taken cover" under a tree...always
a bad idea. This happened at East Fork, a very popular area near Big
South Fork where many horse owners buy a vacation lot and take their
horses up for weekends. The website I found the clipping on was pretty
scary...called http://www.struckbylightning.org/news/dispIncidentdb.cfm
Glad I didn't get my name on it!

An afternoon riding horses turns deadly when lightning strikes in
Fentress County. Authorities say five people were horseback riding at
East Fork Stables near Jamestown when the storm hit. Just before three
this afternoon, a bolt of lightning struck a tree, ran into the ground
and killed a man and two horses. The lightning knocked two other people
to the ground. No word on their conditions right now. Jennifer Geiger ,
