[RC] 100 Mile One Day Rides - Becky Rohwer

but when did "endurance" become about convenience
and domestic comforts?

When more people got interested in the sport.  I don't think every rider now a days is goal oriented to do 1 day 100's.  I've been riding endurance for about 11 or so years now.  I've thought about a 1 day 100 and even came close to doing one last year, but woosed out I guess.  For me it just isn't a goal of mine.  I've done 75's and 2 day 100's.  I take most of my vacation time each year to travel to rides.  So for me it is my vacation.  I want to ride my horse, I want to have fun, I want to relax a little.  Yup, I could probably just trail ride and get the same, but I also like the competition of it and the challenge.  I still wake up the morning of a ride and ask myself just what makes me think I can ride a horse 50 miles today.  Once I get out on the trail I settle into it OK, but I sure can be nervous at the start.
I guess to throw in my 2 cents on the subject what I would really like to see are more 75's.  I like those because they are a little more of a challenge but you can usually finish them before dark.  And to be honest, maybe the possibility of having to ride in the dark does freak me out a little.
