RE: [RC] [GaitedEnduranceRiders] WHY TROT? - Spencer, Maryann LTC

Title: Re: [RC] [GaitedEnduranceRiders] WHY TROT?
Naturally gaited?  Does it exist or do you have to put gadgets on them to get them to do the smooth gaits. Yrs ago rode a TWH bareback and no gadgets and could not believe how smooth.  I am considering moving to TWH, retirement is not far off.  Seems they have more athletic ability for endurance than some other nonArab breeds. I am speaking in general terms so qtr horse owners who do endurance don't get hot under the collar.  It also seems the TWH has a calmer disposition than the Arabs. This also is a generalization of MINE so don't get out your flaming tools.  Am just wanting info. about TWHs.  mas

Kitty, I sure can't *rest* my body at a trot, that is why I left my arabs.

My horses walk, flatwalk, runwalk, rack, and canter. They are using I would
say a nice variety of the muscle groups when we ride. My horses trot at will
in the pastures if they like and when I work them in the round pen, by the
very dynamics of the round pen they find it much easier to do a beautiful
trot rather than their preferred gait.

I love to see them do a trot at will....without me on them. It shows me the
extention they have. It is beautiful! I have no problem with that.

But not when I am on board. They are gaited horses and that is what I expect
out of them. A lovely smooth consistent gait. As far as using the trot for a
pacey horse....well that is another topic. I would never own a horse that
paces in the first place. I have yet to see a pacing horse ever leave that
gawd awful gait. I would rather ride a trot, at least you can post that.

But as Paul said...to each his own. If you are happy riding a gaited horse
at a trot...go for it. I just don't get it and I won't ride my horses in
anything other than what they are bred for....smooth gaiting to get me done
with a fifty in comfort. Won't ever hear me moaning after the ride!

Hi Amber,
I am replying not to start a controversy but just to put a plug in for the
"other side."
You asked why anyone with a smooth-riding horse would want to trot?
1) to rest my body
2) to rest the horse
3 to exercise different muscle groups - his and mine
4) because we can and still not lose the gaits. (Contrary to old wives'
tales, trotting a gaited horse does not make him less able to gait, in fact,
it improves many pacey horses.)
I'm sure if I thought about it, I could come up with more reasons, ha ha,
but I just got done with 3 12-hour night shifts and am not too smart this
morning.
Have a great day, and see how many gears these guys have.  It might surprise
you!
