I have, once when I was vet secretary at a ride.  But that horse had all the 
other signs there was trouble afoot as well, the thumps were just 
incidental.

On the other hand, I've seen at least a half dozen cases where, had there 
been no thumps, the horse would've passed the VC with flying colors. 

That's it in a nutshell.  If the thumping horse also is failing to
recover, has hydration issues, etc. then there is certainly cause for
concern--but the thumps are just one more straw on the camel.   When
that's the ONLY problem and all other parameters are good, IMO thumps
are a sign to be cautious, but need not be a sign to quit.
