Poppy cock. English saddles work just fine and lots of people ride them at all distances. As far as your horse good luck - that's a very difficult conformation to fit in any but a custom saddle. I have one of those - nice wither, spreading to a wide back very quickly. Mine also has a straight back that is also very short. He'll be able to carry a ton in the saddle if I can find the right saddle.
