Re: [RC] Fw: health passport - Truman Prevatt

You should point them to FL. You could always get a six month extension to a healt certificate (a copy into the state along with copies of the coggines) for travel between FL, GA and AL. As of this year you can now get an "equine passport card." This is a six month health certificate passport for travel in most of the SE states plus, OK, LA and Ark. The only SE state not participating is, you guessed it KY, but the state vet told me he believed KY will come onboard soon.

You send to the state a copy of a valid health certificate, a copy of your coggines and a three digital pictures of your horse (one from each side and a face shot) and they will return to you a card about the size of your passport - a card about the size of a drivers license with the three pictures of your horse and all the current coggins and health certificate data. If he is chipped, branded or tattoed that will also be noted. It just started this year and was free. I think next year it will be five bucks per horse - but that's a bargin.

Works great.

FWIW, vets (at least equine vets) don't have a particularly strong lobby.
Even in California and probably less so in other states other than maybe
Kentucky. I wish we did, we'd have better luck dealing with some of the
illegal practicing-medicine-without-a-license crowd and other issues. Hell,
we're lucky we even have a mailbox at the Department of Consumer Affairs---
Ahnold wants to put *all* the licensed professional boards under one roof to
be run by a non-veterinarian entity. Wouldn't THAT be lovely?

Writing out health certificates aren't a significant source of income or
profit, at least not in our practice. It takes me about 30 minutes on
average to do all the paperwork involved, get in and out the door and I get
$30 for it. I do also get a $52 farm call, but with gas at $2.50 a gallon
and fighting LA traffic, believe me, there's no profit in that whatsoever.
I have to generate a lot more than that per hour to pay bills and take home
a paycheck and I sure don't make it writing health certificates.

I'd be more than happy for HCs to be valid for six months.
