It is my personal opinion that many horses very quickly get bored with pasture etc. When they are near the barn or their friends all they can think of is to go back to play. I have always gotten my green/new horses out on the trails as quick as possible. Hand walking away or when they get scared is fine. If they act up, get off and walk away from the barn then ride when they clam down etc. It is surprising how quickly they learn that going on the trail is just like the ring, only better.
