Re: [RC] covers,etc necc/helpful ? - Rosalie MarleyIf your horse is like mine, your nice dry shed of hay will be full of manure in no time :-) I am planning to go to round bales this year and have been quizzing neighbors and acquaintences on what does/doesn't work for them. 1) the ability to move the location is good in that it spreads out the damage in the pasture/corral and cuts down on mud holes. The area around cement slab will get big holes. 2) Tying a big tarp across the top of feed ring helps shed rain/snow from the bale itself, and is a great "desensitizing" method. 3) If you use a feed ring (aka "roundbale ring"), try to find one for horses unless you don't mind their manes getting rubbed out. The cattle ones have closed loops that the horses can put their heads/necks through and get rubs. Just sharing the local wisdom that was shared with me - I won't know from first-hand experience til after this winter. I'm in SW Nebraska, we get some storms but overall it's fairly dry and windy.
