Re: [RC] Possible overconditioned horse (long) - Barbara McCrary

I remember Julie Suhr saying one time that the best Tevis she ever rode was on Gazal when he hadn't been ridden for three weeks prior.

I see that I misread the calendar, the Tevis is two weeks away, not one.

So I'll modify my recommendation a bit: still no riding AT ALL for the next
week, then an evaluation ride of no more than 10 - 15 miles at the pace you plan
to ride the Tevis. And no other riding the second week until you arrive at the
ride site (then a short loosening-up jog of a couple of miles is ok). Your
horse is not going to lose any fitness in two weeks!

If your horse's heartrates, recoveries, and attitudes aren't back to normal on
the evaluation ride, you ought to consider passing up the ride. It's a tough
100 miles, you don't want to start it already behind the curve.

Adequate REST is an extremely important component of any conditioning program,
especially if you want a horse to last for years.
