We once attended a brunch where a similar thing happened to the carving chef. Apparently standing still for long periods of time can sometimes cause "pooling" of blood in the lower part of the body, which reduces blood pressure to the brain and causes a fainting spell. He dropped like a stone, narrowly missing his own carving knife. We learned later that this sort of thing happens occasionally to soldiers who are asked to stand motionless for long periods of time....


It can happen to people sitting on airplanes too long. I you are going on a long flight - get up and move around.
