The other thing I do is after administering elytes, I fill up the syringe with water and rinse their mouths out a little.

I've been using one of the "guns" for a year or so now and find it much
easier to use than a syringe. It's smaller and though has a metal tip,
much smoother on the horses mouth, and with the pressure it's pretty easy
to get it in them. One horse in particular really hates the whole
process but is much easier to dose with the gun.
