1. There is a new non-DEET spray out with a chemical
called Picaridan.  It is supposed to smell better and
not melt synthetic fabrics.  I know that Cutter makes it
and other brands too; check the labels on the skeeter 
spray in your local store.  This is a spray for people. 
I've found the ENDURE to be the best one for horses.

2.  Antihistamines can help both you and your horse
if you swell up and itch a lot from the bites.  Take
before going out.   Caution: you must not use antihistamines
on your horse during or about 4 days before competition.
