Re: [RC] OT For Women.. - Maryanne Gabbani

With all of this discussion of recovery time, I think that Lee's point should be well taken. If any of us were to undertake a serious surgery for our horse, we would surely allow plenty of recovery time. Our bodies are also worth the care.

During the last ice age when I was an undergraduate, I had to have a biopsy and cauterisation for a cervical problem that they were worried was the beginnings of cancer. It wasn't but I was told by a doctor to rest for about 5 days and then resume "normal" activities. Unfortunately my "normal" activities included walking about 5 to 8 miles a day in the course of a part time job. After 3 days I was back in the doctor's office as he explained stress-induced exhaustion to me. This time it was 10 days in bed. He told me that he assumed that "normal" for me was more like other people's normal....going grocery shopping, doing some housework and so on. "Normal" doesn't usually include horseback riding so be sure to talk about this with your doctor. After all, if a vet that assumed your horse was a pasture ornament referred to "normal activities", he wouldn't be talking about doing 50 miles.

Give yourself the time to heal, as long a you'd give your horse. This hasn't bee OT at all, really.

I think "why" you are having the surgery also comes into play. It would be a lot different if you were having the hysterectomy for dysfunctional bleeding as opposed to another cause.

Good luck in any event and be as kind and gentle to yourself during recovery as you would be to your horse.
